A day at kindergarten
Each session follows a routine to allow the children to feel relaxed and secure. A typical session is as follows (please note these timings are all meant as guidelines and we are led by the children’s involvement in activities before we break to move on).
8:30 – 9:00 - Children are welcomed at Kindergarten, hang up their coats and put their water bottles in the basket. They sit together on the carpet and we sing our ‘hello’ song to each other. We all count how many girls/boys and children altogether. We say our daily prayer and then talk about any news we have to share. The children chose their daily job. This could be chopping fruit, laying the table, washing up or watering the plants( to name but a few).
9:00 – 10:30 - Activities take place both indoors and outside in a free flow system. There is always a creative and craft table, number & shape table and plenty opportunity for mark making. The floor activities vary daily and the children are encouraged to share their choice of play equipment and select what they would like to play with.
10:30 – 10:45 - A tambourine is shaken for tidy up time and the children are encouraged to tidy away their toys before sitting on the carpet where we read a story, talk about the day of the week and the weather.
We then have snack time- milk or water and a selection of fruit.
10:45 – 11.15 - The children resume activities-inside or outdoors. The Kindergarten uses the extensive school grounds, playground, grassy areas and woodland for lots of fun investigative play! We might see big sisters or brothers at the school.
11:15 – 11:30 - The children take part in small group activities, circle time, musical instruments, letters and sounds. This could take place outside if the weather permits.
11:30- 11:45 - The children come and sit on the carpet and reflect on all they have achieved during the morning. They sing some of their favourite songs before singing ‘Goodbye’ to each other.
Then some children go home.
11:45 - 12:30 - Lunchtime. After being taken to the toilet and washing their hands the children sit down at the table to eat their packed lunch. During the summer months we enjoy taking our lunches outside to have a picnic in the shade of a big oak tree in the lower school field.
12:30-2:45 - The children set about their chosen activities, both indoors and in our secure outdoor area with climbing frame and slide. The children are free to make their own choices and we encourage independence and resilience. We do encourage children to stay focused on an activity until they are happy that it has been completed .
2:45- 3:00 - A tambourine is shaken for tidy up time and the children are encouraged to tidy away their toys before sitting on the carpet where we talk about the day before listening to a story. They sing some of their favourite songs before singing ‘Goodbye’ to each other and then wait to be collected to go home.
